How RateBrain checks rates
RateBrain tracks 412 nationally available rates from 106 banks and credit unions, with rate history back to 2009. Every rate is the annual percentage yield (APY) for a $10,000 deposit. 170 rates changed in the last 7 days.
Where the rates come from
Each rate comes from the bank or credit union’s own public rate page. RateBrain checks those pages automatically twice a day, at about 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Pacific time. When a rate looks unusual (a very large move, an out-of-range value, or a reading we are not confident about) it goes to a person for review before it is published.
Nationally available and federally insured
We list accounts that anyone in the United States can open, not offers limited to one state or region. Every bank listed is federally insured by the FDIC, and every credit union by the NCUA, up to the legal limits.
The $10,000 deposit rule
Many accounts pay different rates at different balances. RateBrain always reports the rate that applies to a $10,000 deposit, and has done so since it began tracking rates in 2009. If no tier covers $10,000, we show the rate for the lowest balance tier and list its minimum deposit. This keeps every rate and every chart comparable over time.
APY, not interest rate
Rates are shown as annual percentage yield (APY), which includes compounding. When a bank shows both an interest rate and an APY, we use the APY.
Medians
The median rate for a category (for example, 1 Year CDs) is the middle rate across every product in that category that we were tracking at the time. Charts show the monthly median, and only for months with at least five products.
What “last checked” means
“Last checked” is when RateBrain last successfully read the rate from the bank’s page, whether or not it changed. A rate’s history only records the dates it actually changed. The most recent check across all rates was on September 20, 2026.
